The Cutting Edge: Metro Laundry Service Invests in Advanced Linen Tracking & Ironing Technologies

CAPITOL HEIGHTS, MD, June 14, 2024—Metro Laundry Service has recently invested in advanced commercial laundry technologies to enhance its services now and accommodate a wider range of hotel needs in the near future. These technology investments will improve linen tracking in the plant and equip the company with the capabilities to fine-tune the cleaning process for each hotel’s needs.

The Technology

RFID Tracking

This revolutionary technology uses radio waves to automatically transmit data from tags installed on the linens to a reader that identifies and tracks each individual piece.

Metro Laundry Service initially incorporated Radio Frequency Identification Tracking, or RFID Tracking, into its operations in 2018. The company temporarily suspended the use of RFID during the pandemic but has recently reintroduced it.

“Now that the system is back in place and being utilized, we’re ready to accommodate our client’s needs, whether they are new to RFID or if they are already using it,” said Metro Laundry Service COO Steven Young. “It can be a game changer when it comes to linen tracking, especially for our larger clients who have a lot of linen turnovers.”

Thermal Ironers

The company recently replaced several old ironing systems with electric thermal ironers that provide a range of benefits, including faster turnaround time, increased reliability, customizable heating settings, and stain identification. They also operate using a heater system instead of steam, reducing the company’s reliance on boilers, cutting down the turnaround time, and increasing overall reliability.

Dash Cams

In addition to investment in equipment within the plant, Metro Laundry Service recently equipped its entire delivery fleet with dashboard cameras to ensure driver safety and monitor delivery protocols.

What’s Next

These advancements are just the latest measures that the company has taken in its commitment to staying on the cutting edge.

“We are always watching technology in our industry to see what best benefits our operation and our clients,” said Steven. “The pursuit of technology is not only for increased production and efficiency but also for best practices related to environmental sustainability and business sustainability. We anticipate making significant equipment upgrades to reduce water consumption and overall energy consumption in the next 5 years.”
