Maryland is Open for Business Governor & Lt. Governor Highlight Administration’s Economic Development Successes Across the State
ANNAPOLIS, MD—Governor Larry Hogan this week visited several Maryland businesses and future business locations across the state, including the site of the future Cyber Town USA development at Port Covington in Baltimore City, Crystal Steel Fabricators in Caroline County, and Mistletoe Hall Commerce Business Park in Talbot County. Lt. Governor Boyd Rutherford attended the new Metro Laundry Service opening in Howard County.
On Thursday, Governor Hogan was joined by Baltimore City Mayor Catherine Pugh, the Port Covington Development Team, and Baltimore business and community leaders to announce the initial phase of the 235-acre waterfront development will become an epicenter for cyber and tech companies on the East Coast.
“It’s great to be here with all of you to celebrate this exciting day of business development for Baltimore City and for the state of Maryland as we mark the next important step in the transformative vision for Port Covington,” said Governor Hogan. “We welcome DataTribe, AllegisCyber, and Evergreen Advisors as the first official tenants in the next phase of development.”
Governor Hogan also visited Crystal Steel Fabricators in Federalsburg, Md., a state-of-the-art structural steel fabrication company. The company purchased the 96,000 square foot site in 2016 after Governor Hogan personally advocated for its expansion to Maryland. The site is equipped with the latest fabrication equipment and Federalsburg will have the capacity to fabricate 20,000 tons of structural steel per year, doubling total company production.
“We are so pleased to have our Federalsburg location up and running. Not only is there plenty of space to efficiently fabricate and manage the day-to-day administrative side of the business, but the facility has easy railway access, allowing us to receive extra-long raw materials,” said Bill Lo, President of Crystal Steel Fabricators. “Maryland was the natural choice for expansion as the new shop is close to our headquarters in Delaware allowing for easy management and collaboration while tapping into a great source of qualified employees. The Town of Federalsburg, Caroline County, and the State of Maryland have been instrumental in clearing out obstacles to expand and invest in our facility. Governor Hogan reached out to me during our diligence phase and asked us to come to Maryland and his pitch that Maryland is ‘open for business’ has proven to be absolutely true.”
Governor Hogan broke ground on the new Mistletoe Hall Commerce Business Park in Easton, Md, establishing a new industrial park that will allow businesses in the region to expand. The Hogan administration, Talbot County, and City of Easton diligently worked together to acquire a $2.3 million U.S. Department of Commerce grant to make the business park a reality. According to grantee estimates, the project is expected to create 55 new jobs, retain 137 jobs, and spur $4.5 million in private investment for the state of Maryland.
Lt. Governor Rutherford helped cut the ribbon on Metro Laundry Service in Howard County this week. A family-owned linen laundering business serving major hotel management companies since 2002, Metro Laundry Service uses state-of-the-art linen management software, environmentally responsible practices, and they are certified by the Capital Region Minority Supplier Diversity Council as a Minority Business Enterprise.
“It was great to help cut the ribbon on Metro Laundry Service in Howard County, not only does the opening of Metro Laundry mean 100 new Maryland jobs, it also means new business for local machine vendors and service providers as well as truck fleets and welding services,” said Lt. Governor Rutherford. “That’s the powerful ripple effect that local small businesses have on our economy. Maryland is truly open for business!”
